Welcome future NMSU students and families
Interacting in First Year Scholars Program
What is First Year Scholars??? Look at it this way. If you were landing in a new universe, you would hope for someone there to welcome you and show you the ropes. How does a person get one's own needs met here? Does he/she need an ID card? Where to get it? Where to eat? How to know what skills will increase potential for success? What lack of skills will likely lead to failure? Where to get those skills?
First Year Scholars is that friend in an alien world. We guide first year students through tasks such as:
- selecting courses
- planning and establishing academic goals
- navigating financial aid
- learning what resources are available and when and where to access them
- finding your way around!
- becoming acquainted with advisors, instructors, staff and deans
- securing tutoring services
- meeting new friends through learning community
- many more!
Additionally we:
- Provide advocacy when necessary
- Monitor and track your academic progress
- Provide a one credit hour introductory course to teach success skills
- Publish news items and updates and important events information
- Host pizza parties!
- Are available during office hours with an open door policy - Walk in or make an appointment
